On 7 June 2024, the Philippine Embassy in Spain co-organized with the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos the inauguration event for the online asynchronous course on Philippine-Spanish Literature. Said course is free (although certificate may be requested upon payment of 25 euros) through this link: https://urjcx.urjc.es/courses/course-v1:URJCx+URJCx115+AH/about and is available in Filipino, English, Spanish, and French languages. It delves on various topics such as colonial Philippine-Spanish literature, literary transformation and independence during the 19th century, golden period of Philippine-Spanish literature from 1902 to 1942, present Philippine-Spanish literature from 1942-2022 and Philippine-Spanish literature through digital humanities.
The course is the outcome project of the DigiPhiLit program of the URJC, which is co-financed under the Erasmus+ project of the European Commission, in collaboration with the Ateneo de Manila University, University of Antwerp, Université Paris Nanterre, Université Clermont Auvergne, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) or National University for Distance Education. It is being offered as one of the courses under the URJC Massive Open Online Course (MOOC).
The event was attended by officials, namely Mr. César Cáceres Taladriz, Vice Chancellor of Transformation, Digital Education and Artificial intelligence and academic members of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and also language assistants or Filipino auxiliares based in Spain and URJC Academic Director Jaime Urquiza Fuentes.
The coordinator for the project Beatriz Álvarez Tardío is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Translation and Interpretation Program at Rey Juan Carlos University, Spain. Among her publications are Writing Athwart: Adelina Gurrea’s Life and Works (2009) with Ateneo de Manila University Press, the critical editions: Gurrea’s Cuentos de Juana (2009) and Laygo’s Relatos (2015) with Instituto Cervantes, and several articles and book chapters on the topic. She curated the exhibit “Na linia secreto del horizonte: literatura hispanofilipina” at the Instituto Cervantes (2021). She coordinates the MOOC “Literatura hispanofilipina”, a result of the Erasmus+ DigiPhiLit project, directed to students of Spanish as a foreign language and the academe, and those interested in the history and culture of Southeast and PH-Spanish history.
The Philippine Embassy in Spain also held a conference for Filipino auxiliares with resource speakers from language assistants and other facilitators to discuss various issues that the group is experiencing.END
